Ten Hours Until Dawn

Michael Tougias, author of Ten Hours Until Dawn, will visit the library on Wednesday, June 27, at 7 pm to talk about the Blizzard of '78 and the events that took the pilot boat Can Do into the teeth of the storm.

While many of us long-time Yankees remember news reports of buried vehicles on Rte 128 and flooded coastal towns, a larger drama was played out in Salem Sound, leaving a Greek-registered oil tanker, a Coast Guard patrol boat, and the Can Do in extreme peril. Winds and waves wiped out radar, depth finders, and, eventually, power, leaving the vessels at the mercy of the most powerful storm New England has ever seen.

Tougias has meticulously researched the story of Frank Quirk and the Can Do, listening to recorded radio transmissions and interviewing eyewitnesses and family members. The result is a thrilling story with a you-are-there point of view. Copies of Michael Tougias' books will be available to purchase.

This event is brought to Merrimack with a Humanities-to-Go grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council, with additional assistance from the Friends of the Library. Adults and teens will enjoy this program. Registration is recommended by visiting our online calendar, emailing, or calling 424-5021
