Push: A Novel
The novel, Push, by Sapphire, became very popular in the months leading up to the Academy Awards presentations. (The film, Precious, had been nominated for several awards, and Mo'Nique won for best supporting actress). We received many requests from other libraries to borrow the book, but it was always checked out. It certainly isn't an easy book to read, and I suspect the movie is even more difficult to watch. It chronicles an adolescent girl's troubled life in Harlem. Her traumatic daily abuse has resulted in severe learning problems. The reader cannot help but be sympathetic to someone who is trying so hard to improve conditions for her children.
