Library Services Face a Critical Vote

On Monday evening, January 25, at 6:30 pm, the Merrimack Town Council will meet to finalize the town budget for 2010-2011. There are strong indications that the members will support a cut of as much as $200,000 to the library's budget, in addition to the $37,000 cut already made by the Town Manager. A budget reduction of that size will result in staff layoffs, reduced hours and fewer services, including programming for all ages, during the next fiscal year. It will take a long time--years--to replace those services, but the average homeowner will save about $22 on their tax bill. Is this good or bad for Merrimack?

Residents are encouraged to come to the meeting or to otherwise express their opinions to members of the Town Council. Contact information for them is available here.
